Cellphones may grab all the attention but the fact is that it is the apps that run on them truly enable us to lead a connected lifestyle. And not surprisingly, there were stacks of apps around the Mobile World Congress. Here are just a couple that caught our eye.
Clip in Touch
This is an application that lets you mix content, i.e, photos, videos, text and voice, and send personalised messages to whomsoever you want. It has a Web as well as a mobile interface, so you can send clips either to your friend's PC or mobile from your PC or mobile. The content is also available on the Clip in Touch repository in a readymade fashion. You can also express your creativity by adding your voice or video to it. The content put by the user gets added by an automatic integration process. Once made and sent, the receiver gets a link on his or her phone or PC and they can watch the clip just by clicking on it. This application is compatible with most platforms the only constraint is the requirement of Internet access both to make and receive the clip.
This application is expected to hit Indian markets in the later half of the year. Spinning Words Voice-to-screen messaging company Spin Vox had the most interesting stand at the Mobile World Congress. Thousands of little human dolls with cubes in place of their heads were stacked together, symbolic of their application Spin Vox Messenger. The apps allow operators to provide a service of 'speaking a text' when a call drops. The voice message is then converted into text and sent to the receiving party thereby allowing them to connect to the receiver instantly instead of disconnecting the call. It is different from voicemail as the receiver gets an SMS instantly and doesn't have to access a voice recoding service to get the
message and doesn't have to pay for it.
The first opera¬tor to deploy this service is Vodafone Spain but the doesn't have any plans to come to India yet. There was a plethora of app at the Mobile World Congress which added value to the mobile users not at the niche, but at the macro level. One such com¬pany was Colibria, which announced a mobile Instant Messaging client for low-cost handsets with features like presence availability, status, and alias, within the contact list. cThe list is endless and with more and more players jumping in there will be no dearth of applications that will enrich our mobile lifestyle. We are not complaining!
VRINGO
Vringo was another interesting application showcased at the event. It allows you to share videos with your friends via video ringtones but only if you are a part of the Vringo community. What happens is that you choose a video ringtone for your buddy on your phone and the moment he or she calls you that video plays on his or her phone! It has two aspects VringForward, which is the video ringtone that plays on your buddy's handset when you call; and VringBack, which is the video ringtone, which will play whenever you call your buddy.
Apart from the normal content available online you can also upload your own videos to be played as video ringtones. To get this service, you need to sign up at the Vringo website. However, the fact that it only works on Internet-enabled phones and is limited to a set of people might affect its popularity. But the good thing is that the service is free of cost, although there is a choice to use free or paid content.
