This easy-to-use laser printer from Brother delivers sharp quality prints at an impressive speed of 20 pages per minute. Be it low resolution prints at 300 dpi with toner saving options or highres prints (up to 2400x600 dpi) at highest quality, this printer is truly a fast printer. The printer is configured with a 96 MHz processor together with 8 MB of internal buffer memory. The Brother HL-2040 comes with an exceptional feature set. The toner cartridge is shipped together with the drum unit when you buy the printer. You will need to change only the toner cartridge when it is empty, and change the drum only when it is needed.

The front panel LED indicators light up to show the status of the printer. Separate LEDs light up when the toner is low on ink or empty and when the drum is damaged or wearing out. The average life of the toner cartridge is 1,500 to 2,500 pages while the life of the drum unit is around 12,000 pages. These figures can fluctuate depending on the type, quantity and amount of ink each print job demands. The cost of the toner cartridge is Rs 2,150 and the drum unit costs Rs 3,925, thus bringing the cost per page to around Rs 1.19 which is not very reasonable.

The print quality was above average and is perfectly crisp at higher resolutions, making this printer an excellent choice for home and small office usage. It also features a backward-compatible parallel port interface that can be connected to older computers which are still in use. You may also opt for the higher model (HL-2070N) which features network printing in addition to the parallel and USB interface, while running on a faster 133 MHz processor with 16 M B memory.

VERDICT: If good print speeds and sharp print quality are your needs, then this printer is ideal for your SOHO environment.
FOR: Good speeds, parallel port interface, low height.
AGAINST: No automatic duplex printing, slight curling of the paper after printing, it is not entirely quiet while printing.
