Windows XP Service Pack 2 arrives with a fixed firewall aspect that assists create your system less vulnerable to harass by outside consumers or by hateful software, for instance viruses. You an also turn it off but it is not optional unless you have some other firewall solution.

A firewall is PC software or hardware that confines data that arrives to your computer from other computers on the internet and permits you to control the data coming in and out of your computer. It ensures information or traffic coming from the internet or your network and then either permits or disallows it, conditional on your firewall settings. It will permit you to modify settings such as which network connection the firewall will be utilized on. Most consumers will only have their one major internet or network connection. You can also allow logging from this area. There are the next options for logging:

To enable logging of ineffective inbound connection attempts, choose the Log dropped packets check box.

To enable logging of unbeaten outbound connections, select the Log unbeaten connections check box.

Under Log File Options you can modify the name and place of the firewall log.
Security logging is not allowed by default.

You can also decide to have the computers on your network share error and position information using ICMP.

Remember that the Windows Firewall does not notice or disable computer viruses and worms if they are already on your computer, stop you from opening e-mail with dangerous accessories or block spam or unsolicited e-mail. So you still require being careful and implementing virus defense software and watching for those strange e-mails.
